How to Tell If You Have a Leak

Think you have a leak at your home or business? If so, there’s no time to waste! Begin your investigation and then ensure the necessary repairs are made in a timely fashion. This is because leaks don’t just have the potential to be damaging to your property, but also costly. In fact, it’s estimated that in an average household leaks can account for more than 10,000 gallons of wasted water each year — and you can bet you’ll feel that impact on your water bill.

So, if you think you have a leak, how do you determine it? Here’s a look at some steps to take:

3 Signs of a Leak

Think you have a leak at your home or business? If so, there’s no time to waste! Begin your investigation and then ensure the necessary repairs are made in a timely fashion. This is because leaks don’t just have the potential to be damaging to your property, but also costly. In fact, it’s estimated that in an average household leaks can account for more than 10,000 gallons of wasted water each year — and you can bet you’ll feel that impact on your water bill.

So, if you think you have a leak, how do you determine it? Here’s a look at some steps to take:

3 Signs of a Leak

  1. Look for the obvious: Many leaks are easy to catch and simple to fix. Faucets, shower heads, and toilets account for many leaks, simply because these are often used appliances that contain components that wear down over time. Look for dripping faucets and listen for running toilets. Usually, the culprit of such leaks are worn washers in sinks, and issues with either the flapper valve, flush handle, or overflow tube on toilets.

  2. Watch your meter: You’ll likely be tipped off of a leak if you notice a substantial increase in your water bill. However, you can also do some investigating yourself. Pick a 2-hour period of the day when you won’t use any water. Check your home or office’s water meter and then compare its reading 2 hours later. If it has moved, you likely have a leak somewhere.

  3. Examine your walls, ceilings: Some leaks aren’t so obvious to detect because they are occurring inside of wall cavities. But these are the leaks that arguably require the most urgent attention, or else they could result in structural damage and mold/mildew growth. Look for water stains or discoloration on the walls and ceilings of the property. You can also try to feel these building materials to see if they are damp or if you notice a difference in temperature. Repairs to these types of hidden leaks are generally more invasive and likely require some reconstruction as well, but they’re arguably the most important to address.
